14:10 – 14:40 | “The potential of perennial crops to disrupt agricultural production systems and reduce impacts on the environment and climate” by Uffe Jørgensen Perennial crops usually have a long growing season and a deep, continuous root system. This creates a potential for a very efficient use of the resources for growth: light, water and nutrients. Perennial crops therefore have a high yield potential. At the same time, losses of nutrients and greenhouse gases can be very low due to the efficient resource use. This makes increased use of perennial crops a possibility for Danish agriculture to comply with the demands for reduced nutrient losses to the aquatic environment and for reaching zero emission targets for greenhouse gas emissions. With the possibility of increased markets for grasses and legumes for green biorefining into protein concentrate, materials and bioenergy, there is a potential for disrupting the primary agricultural production system. In addition, there may also be ways to produce perennial cereals, which will be discussed. |
