Intercropping’s effect on flavonoids – moving closer to a sustainable agriculture

During her PhD studies, Ida Kristine Lysgaard Andersen researched the effect of intercropping on the metabolome, specifically flavonoids, in narrow-leafed lupin and spring barley. Flavonoids are plan-specialised metabolites found in a variety of plant species, and they are involved in several plant functions, such as legume nodulation, plant defence and signalling. Ida Kristine Lysgaard Andersen studied how intercropping changes the concentration of multiple flavonoids in the shoots, roots and rhizosphere soil of narrow-leafed lupin and spring barley, as well as annotation of several new flavonoids never reported in lupin before.

The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how the effect of intercropping on the metabolome can be utilised to facilitate the green transition in the agricultural production.
The PhD study was completed at The Department of Agroecology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
